Background:

Francis John Ewing was born 9 March 1909 at 9 Corsewall Street, Coatbridge, County of Lanark.  He married Ivy Grace Wilton on 8 August 1931, Woolston, Southampton.

He joined the Royal Navy as an Engine Room Artificer.  Family recollections tell us that he was a member of the RN Subs. in Australia 1950.  Francis John was also photographed in Wei-Hai-Wei sportsground canteen, North China, June 1934.  An image of submarines has a written note on the back: Meoway and Sims, Wei-Hai-Wei May-Sept 1933.  It is recalled that he spent 2 years in China and also Hong Kong/Singapore.  He was at sea in a life raft for 10 days after a sinking in 1944 and this may have been the second time it happened to him.  He was invalided out of the Navy prior to the end of World War Two and is believed to have entered the Merchant Navy.  He went to prison for approx 6 months in 1946/7 and left for Australia shortly afterwards.
